Treatment for MCL Injury

MCL Injury

MCL Injury

Any pain or tenderness felt on the inside of the knee could stem from an injury to the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL). The knee may feel unstable, especially when any kind of weight is placed on it.

Sometimes, you may even notice swelling at the site of injury; this will depend on how severely you’ve injured your knee.

The MCL is located on the inside of the knee which protects it from any kind of unusual movement that could potentially cause your knee to bend too far inward.

Any direct blows to the knee can injure this ligament, be it contact sport, falling down, or twisting the knee joint while stepping down stairs. Whatever the cause, the end result is that the medial collateral ligament is damaged.

In some cases, flatfoot posture can be considered as one of the causes of MCL injury.

Flat feet can affect the alignment of bones, and subsequently impacts the functionality of the ligaments, tendons, and muscles. This leads to improper functioning of not only the foot, but also the knee, hips and back. This can put you at greater risk for MCL injury.

To diagnose such an injury, your doctor would have to physically examine your knee to test the stability of your ligaments. This would be followed by imaging tests such as X-ray, and MRI scans for further diagnosis to ensure there are no broken bones.

Once a diagnosis is made, initial treatment would include resting the injured knee, applying ice packs to reduce the swelling, and compressing the knee with a brace. Strengthening and mobility exercises will help in restoring optimal movement of the knees.

A long-term treatment programme may include the use of foot insoles from MASS4D® to correct the alignment of the knees, promote normal functioning of the ligaments, and prevent re-injury.
