Study shows the effect of sports flooring and shoes on ground forces during jumps

MASS4D® Medical Review

Shoes with cushioned support are frequently recommended for athletes as a way to lower the impact of intense ground forces during jumping.

Another factor that needs to be considered for reducing the impact of such ground forces is the flooring which should be made from a material that is highly absorbent of shock forces.

For this purpose, a study was conducted by researchers from Luxembourg to help determine the effects of five different sports flooring conditions and sports shoes on athletic performance during jumps.

41 physically active and healthy men were enrolled from local sports clubs for this study.

These men were all between the ages of 18 and 50 years, had a shoe size between 42 and 47, were experienced in jump training through regular practice of sports that involved jump tasks.

There were mainly two types of jump tasks that were investigated – ankle jumps and multi-jumps.

For ankle jumps, the men had to jump as high as possible using primarily their lower legs and ankle muscle power with straight knees.

The multi-jump task involved two consecutive counter-movement jumps which had the jumper starting from an upright standing position and then proceeding to flexing and extending their knees and hips to jump up vertically off the ground.

These tasks were performed on four different sports flooring of varying thickness positioned on two force places. The fifth one involved the use of force plates on no flooring.

Two types of running shoes were used – minimalist shoes with greater flexibility and cushioned shoes with greater shock absorption properties.

The study found that cushioning influences impact forces during jump tasks whether provided by sports flooring or shoes. This can help in reducing sports injury risk.
