Causes of Foot Friction Blisters

Foot Friction Blisters

Foot Friction Blisters

Foot friction blisters refer to splits or separations which occur between the outermost three layers of the skin in the foot. An increase in the friction force over a period of time can ultimately develop into a blister within the skin.

Foot deformities, poorly fitting footwear, rise in skin temperature and elevated moisture levels are the common causes of foot friction blisters.

Additionally, athletic activities can also affect the formation of foot blisters due to the repeated stress placed on the skin. This is one of the reasons why the risk of developing friction blisters is high amongst long-distance running sports.

Foot friction blisters can be painful, which is why sufferers commonly modify their walking stride to reduce stress on the injured area. This can restrict mobility, which may affect lower body function in the long term, and cause secondary conditions to develop during intensive or extensive exercise.

Foot problems, such as weak foot posture, may contribute to the development of friction blisters. With flat feet, there is uneven distribution of weight to the forefoot and the big toe as the foot arch collapses. The increase in pressure can make the forefoot prone to friction blisters.

Additionally, weak foot posture can also affect the alignment of the lower body. With flat feet and altered movement from friction blisters, a person may be at a greater risk of developing lower body conditions.

According to a report in the American College of Sports Medicine Health & Fitness Journal, small blisters with a size less than 5mm can be managed by protecting the area from increased pressure.

Health care professionals often recommend socks made from acrylic/polyester fibres, hydrocolloid dressing, topical antiperspirant and cushioned insoles to treat friction blisters.

MASS4D® foot insoles support the feet in their healthiest posture to promote proper distribution of weight to the feet. This removes excessive stress from the injury-prone areas. With proper cushioning, the insoles are able to absorb much of the stress on the feet.

MASS4D® insoles help reduce the risk of blisters and calluses. MASS4D® does this by supporting the foot in its optimal posture, prompting a healthy full body posture above and proper weight pressure to the bottom of the feet.
